The New Urbanism
New Urbanism is a movement that has been formatted since the 1980s in the United States and that, in 1993, had a foundational text presented at the Congress of New Urbanism. The new town planners have since gained the sympathy of various places in the world with their vision that supports a contextualized architecture, with optimization of free areas, and the balanced development between work and residence. Regionalization strategies that, among many advantages, seek to generate traffic reduction and improvement in quality of life. The New Urbanism Charter also covers issues such as historic preservation, safe streets, green buildings, recycling and revitalization of buildings and sites. In short, the idea is to turn to the neighborhood, where the places of daily activities do not exceed 10 km away from the radius of your residence. A reality that has been materializing in Florianópolis with strides.
The displacement to the center of the city requiring great distances, especially for residents of neighborhoods in the extreme north or south of Santa Catarina Island, is increasingly being replaced by the offer of local shops and services. In some districts of the Capital it is already possible to notice this strengthening in the search for autonomy, to meet the needs of its residents. And, following this wave of self-sufficiency preached by the New Urbanism, the new neighborhoods are obliged to offer besides conventional subdivisions, projects that contemplate at least housing, leisure and commerce.
An example of this new order is a recent investment by entrepreneurs in the urban planning sector at Real Parque in Ingleses. In an area of more than 300 thousand square meters, the planned neighborhood will offer 280 lots that will house residences, leisure areas such as bike paths, picnic space, net, volleyball court, among others, as well as a wing for commerce and services in a project totally inspired by New Urbanism. Afforestation, public transport, and nearby elementary school, as well as parking spaces, have become essential care for conquering residents. This is because, in an organic way, people ended up absorbing the concept of New Urbanism, even though they did not know the theory, mainly due to the capital’s poor road network.
